Care and Feeding

Congratulations! You've decided to own a Mini Lop. The Mini Lop is truly a versatile breed and is loved by all who own them.

The general care of the rabbit is very easy. One should take care not to over feed the Mini Lop. Generally speaking Mini Lops do well on 4 to 6 oz. of commercial pellets per day. Lots of cool, clean water is needed for proper feed utilization.

A good protein, fiber and fat ration is 17%, 22%, & 3%. If the protein is too high or the fiber is too low, scours or diarrhea could result. Use your best
judgment when feeding your Mini Lop.

When your Mini Lop begins to lose its baby fur, the change is usually gradual. However, once the adult coat is in, it may be necessary to groom your rabbit. Mini Lops in molt can have large patches of fur falling out. It is wise to use a wire slicker brush to remove the loose fur. A Mini Lop can die from large amounts of ingested fur, so take care to avoid this.

Lots of pet Mini Lop owners feed carrots or apples to their rabbits. If you choose to do this, do so with caution. Start by introducing the selected "treat" in small amounts and only once a week. Increase the frequency and the amount of the treat gradually, so that the rabbit's tolerance grows.

Single Mini Lops can do well in a cage 24 x 24 inches. If you plan to breed your doe, then a larger cage is recommended.

Mini Lop ownership can be a very rewarding experience whether it is for pet or show. Take time to fill out a membership application and become a member of this great organization. Information to be included in an application can be found on the Organization page.
